Jonah 1: 1-17

We are continuing in our series on the book of Jonah by honing our focus on Jonah’s descent, as he runs away from God’s calling on his life.

Running from God in disobedience is always a descent. Psalm 1 says, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners nor sits in the seat of scoffers.” The imagery of a man walking, then standing, then fully sitting with those who are defiant and hostile towards God, powerfully illustrates the spirally descent of our sins. Our sins will always eventually lead us to a place we never intended to go.

As we reflect on Jonah’s descent, we also look at the extent that God relentlessly pursues his wayward prophet and how his thwarting of Jonah’s plans is actually his grace in operation, not his wrath.
