We conclude our Advent series by considering Matthew’s announcement of the Christ, and by reflecting on his carefully curated genealogy of Jesus. In the words of Tom Wright, “for many cultures ancient and modern, and certainly in the Jewish world of Matthew’s day, this genealogy was equivalent of a roll of drums, a fanfare of trumpets, and a town crier calling for attention. Any first-century Jew would find this family tree both impressive and compelling. Like a great procession down a city street, we watch figures at the front, and the ones in the middle, but all eyes are waiting for the one who comes in the position of greatest honour, right at the end.”
Jesus’ genealogy doesn’t exactly read like the genealogies of other great kings, his genealogy is structured and organized in peculiar ways and contains within it a surprising cast of characters. In this message brought to us by Pastor Daniel we will explore why Matthew’s carefully curated genealogy of the Christ is such good news for all of humanity.
