With this message we conclude our series on worship by looking at two ordinances that all Protestants, Catholics and Orthodox Christians observe. The two ordinances that all Christians share in common are communion and baptism.
An ordinance is basically a religious ritual that was instituted by Jesus for the church to observe. Ordinances are powerful because they are physical symbols that help Christians remember and focus on the gospel. This is the central theme that Pastor Daniel Kang and Pastoral Intern Daniel Ayim explore, the question, ‘what is the gospel?’
Scot McKnight mentions that “for most American Christians, the gospel is about getting my sins forgiven so I can go to heaven when I die.” Do the act of baptism and communion serve to remember that one salient point about getting to go to heaven? Or do the rites of baptism and communion point to a much fuller more complex story?
