This message brought to us by Pastor Daniel concludes our vision series by drawing our attention to our last updated vision statement:
Bless the world with the message and mercy of Jesus Christ.
This updated vision statement serves as a reminder that any endeavor to love our neighbor must include a commitment to both gospel declaration and gospel demonstration. Our words and deeds must be in concert with each other. The apostle John writes in his epistle, “Little children, let us not love in word or speech, but in action and in truth.” John’s statement doesn’t suggest that encouraging and compassionate words don’t matter, but rather goodwill towards another person without acts of sacrificial service are hollow.
The missiologist David Bosch writes in his book, Transforming Mission:
Evangelism [is] that dimension and activity of the church’s mission which, by word and deed and in the light of particular conditions and a particular context, offers every person and community, everywhere, a valid opportunity to be directly challenged to a radical reorientation of their lives, a reorientation which involves such things as deliverance from slavery to the world and its powers; embracing Christ as Savior and Lord; becoming a living member of his community, the church; being enlisted into his service of reconciliation, peace, and justice on earth; and being committed to God’s purpose of placing all things under the rule of Christ.
