We continue in our series on idolatry focusing on the idol of religion. Paul calls it “self-made religion.” In this message, Pastor Daniel guides us to look at how self-made religion manifests in two primary ways: in moralism and in ascetism.

Moralism is defining your life by the ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts.’ We sometimes call this legalism.

Asceticism comes from the same root word as athleticism. It’s the idea that self-discipline, self-restraint and self-denial as the means of gaining greater spiritual experiences.

What’s tricky about this topic is that the religion or religious ritual are valuable and beneficial. This topic is not intended to drive a wedge between true faith and religious practice. In some ways, looking at your life through the grid of morality and self-restraint is extremely valuable. We will explore what happens to the human condition when these desires become controlling desires.
