Maureen Bennie Boakye continues our summer series on the parables of Jesus, looking at the parable of the persistent widow found in Luke 18:1-8. Luke mentions that Jesus tells this parable to his disciples to teach them how to persist in prayer without losing heart. Surprisingly, Jesus puts forth a widow as the paragon of prayer. Widows in the ancient world generally lacked education, employment, wealth, property, status, and power. In the parable, it’s the widow’s audacious persistence that has the power to even change the mind of a corrupt judge.
In the words of the great cigar smoking preacher, Charles Spurgeon, “God the Holy Ghost writes our prayers, God the Son presents our prayers, and God the Father accepts our prayers. And with the whole Trinity to help us in it, what cannot prayer perform?”
